How to Care for Tungsten Jewelry

If you own a piece of tungsten jewelry, whether it’s a bracelet, a necklace, or a ring, then you’re not alone. A lot of people today are opting to buy tungsten jewelry instead of the usual gold and silver, largely because tungsten is one of the strongest, hardest metals used in making jewellery today. If you’ve got a piece made from tungsten, you can expect it to stay polished and in pristine shape far longer than your gold and silver items.

Tungsten is virtually indestructible, but in order to keep your accessories looking attractive you might want to learn how to keep it nice and clean – the better to show off its beautiful design and high polish.

In order to clean a piece of tungsten, it is important to keep in mind that it may simply be a bit dirty from ordinary wear. After all, jewellery can pick up some of the dirt, sweat, and oil that’s present on your skin. Because tungsten can react to some of the chemicals in ordinary jewellery cleaners, refrain from using these. To remove ordinary dirt, simply use a little mild detergent or hand soap to clean your tungsten accessory.

Sometimes, however, your ring will still retain a small amount of tarnish. To get rid of this, ask your dealer for a good brand of specialty tarnish remover that is safe to use on tungsten. When cleaning off the tarnish, make sure that you only use a very minimal amount on the tip of a cotton bud or applicator.

After applying the chemical tarnish remover, buff the metal with a piece of cloth. This will restore the shine to your piece of jewellery. After buffing, soak the item in mild, soapy water and rinse with warm water afterwards. Dry it with an absorbent cloth, and afterwards, your tungsten accessory should be as good as new.
